Rationale’s Interdependence Day

While our American friends might celebrate the 4th of July as Independence Day, for Rationale it marked the first time night skiing was held up Coronet Peak for the 2018 winter. This was a perfect opportunity to reflect on the year that was, plan for the future, and get together with the wider Rationale family and friends to celebrate the start of winter – at the famous Gobblers Ski Lodge up Coronet.

Once the University of Otago Ski Club, Gobblers is an iconic A-frame kiwi ski hut, a rabbit warren of bunk beds and curtained spaces for hide and seek, complete with a hot drying room and a shot ski or two to speak of its fun history. Our experience was a family friendly affair, even with an eclectic mix of engineers, a slide show and Ed’s latest JBL speaker pumping out the beats.

It was the perfect venue to socialise with 25 of our much-loved Rationale family, kids and partners. As a growing team spread across several locations there were a few staff who had yet to meet face to face, and this was a great opportunity for everyone to get to know each other outside of the office.

As usual Lisa put on an incredible home cooked feast, matched perfectly with great conversation, cold beer and plenty of fine Central Otago wine.

Events like this contribute to Rationale’s positive and confident culture. It was also an opportunity to celebrate Rationale’s recent industry acknowledgment with the win of the Fulton Hogan IPWEA award for excellence in strategy for the Queenstown Masterplan project. The whole team was also treated to a virtual tour of the Wellington office, expertly presented by Neil Cook (and filmed by Mark).

Our project environment can be high-risk, high-pressure and high-profile, and the well-being of our people is our highest priority. Welcoming the new financial year, we reflected on how much we value the people who are at the heart of this business. This was a day to say thank you to our team, to celebrate success, to connect and to have some fun together as Rationale family.

Tom, Andy and Jimmy managed to get in an early morning skin up the hill ski-touring before heading back to the office, which was a wise call after feasting on turkey, hearty veg and lashings of lemon meringue pie. David in our team woke a day older kicking off his birthday near the top of Coronet Peak.

So, all in all another successful outing for the Rationale Family and one that we’ve now added to the calendar on July 4th. A chance to celebrate the great team we have and those around us, Rationale’s inaugural Interdependence Day was a hit and is set to become an annual tradition up at Gobblers Lodge.
