OUR PEOPLE TOM LUCAS

Technical Director

PROFESSIONAL OVERVIEW

Prior to joining Rationale way back in 2003, Tom spent time improving Australian beer production as a graduate process engineer and then moved onto project planning large IT data centre and office fitout jobs in Europe.

On his return to New Zealand, he joined up with Edward and his journey into infrastructure management began. It started with hydraulic modelling, asset management planning and development contributions. This core grounding in asset performance and funding has been invaluable in providing evidence-based advice to clients for the last 18 years.

Tom has a knack for ‘seeing the wood from the trees’ and turning highly complex issues into manageable problems. His mastery of decision-making tools and processes means that these problems can be turned into robust, justified, and transparent solutions. These skills, having been sharpened in the infrastructure realm, are now increasingly being applied across other areas such as regulation, housing and IT to name a few.

Tom enjoys a good challenge, whether it is racing non-stop across the country, or tackling a new emerging problem. He is a quick learner and can get up to speed with new issues efficiently. His role as a technical advisor to the Rationale Team helps set direction and ensure projects are delivering efficiently and effectively to client expectations.

PERSONAL OVERVIEW

Born and raised on a high-country station in Glenorchy, Tom returned to the Wakatipu in 2003 and now lives in Gibbston with his wife (Soph) three kids (Jack, Harry, Lillie) and collection of lifestyle block animals.

A keen adventure racer, skier, and explorer, Tom is at home in the outdoors and spends a lot of his free time in the backcountry, running, ski touring, packrafting and mountain biking.

Tom is reluctant to let age slow him down and is still competing competitively in adventure races around NZ, and overseas, when allowed. He enjoys the challenge and motivation of working hard with the reward of a cold beer.
