Rationale is an independent advisory company that helps government and business leaders make great investment and infrastructure decisions.

Our focus is, and has always been, on improving places for people through helping organisations make great investment decisions. It’s about creating a better world that results in improving the places we live, work and play.

Whether that place is a city, a town, a district or a region, we bring the tools, skills and confidence to navigate through the challenges that inevitably come with solving big problems or realising big aspirations.

While infrastructure has always been a key focus for us, we certainly take a broader view and we have a unique set of skills and partners to provide a holistic set of services. We have invested in new capabilities in areas like planning, communications and strategy to compliment our long held strength in investment decision making, financial analysis and asset management.

The world is becoming increasingly complicated and the expectations on investment in our towns, cities and regions are increasing all the time. Our History


Rationale was established in Arrowtown in 1999 by infrastructure engineer Edward Guy whose vision was to deliver improved infrastructure outcomes for New Zealand while pursuing his passion for the outdoors and adventure. He was joined in 2003 by fellow engineer, adventurer and future director, Tom Lucas.

Rationale has evolved considerably since then, diversifying into wider professional advisory services and growing its team from two to twenty or so. However, some things about Rationale remain the same – our reputation for independence, for adding value to everything we do, and for our ability to work seamlessly inside organisations becoming trusted members of the team. So, whether you’re a chief executive looking for strategic advice on how to reinvigorate your organisation or a roading manager seeking innovative ideas for asset management plans, we have the team to help.

We built our team with high-quality, senior advisors who have a strong track record in their professional fields. These people have shown they can assume responsibility for a project with minimum direction, get up to speed quickly, then exceed client expectations. They are supported by an equally talented team of intelligent young analysts. This combination of experience coupled with motivated, energetic self-starters, provides our clients with a highly cost-effective team who are capable of solving the most difficult problems.

In 2017, in response to an increasing involvement with central government and North Island clients, Rationale opened an office in Wellington giving a local presence to this growing client base.
