Our Philosophy

Rationale has never swayed from its philosophy of viewing work/life balance as a key part of our success. We often get together throughout the year to celebrate successes, share adventures, or socialise outside work. Several of us have children and we believe that having quality time to help nurture them is as important as the work we do improving infrastructure outcomes.

Our team come from a variety of countries and technical specialties, but with the common trait of leading active and challenging lives outside work. We believe people who can dig deep to climb mountains, win endurance races or teach their kids to ski or play rugby also bring their determination and drive to helping solve the problems of our clients.

We know that people are our biggest asset. Shared values and strong team work are some of the foundations of our success. We believe in being human, in building relationships, not networks, and in treating each other as people, not job titles.

We are always on the lookout for sharp people who share our values, thrive on a challenge and believe in our commitment to adding value for our clients. If this sounds like you, please contact us.

Our stories

Mark – Senior Advisor

Having worked at NZTA for 4 years (and following an unusual career path prior to that), I was looking for the next challenge. It made sense to move to a consultancy, however I wasn’t that interested in going to one of the ‘big players’ – I wanted somewhere a bit more personal.

When Rationale approached me, the company felt like a good fit pretty quickly. Not only did they offer a broad range of work which would allow me to learn a lot of new skills, the company has a passion for outdoor adventure – which suits me down to the ground.

Paddling down the Rees river on an inflatable canoe at last year’s Christmas party was a good affirmation that my decision to work at Rationale was the right one.

Rock climbing trips don’t normally end with an offer of a graduate job, but the term “normal” doesn’t really suit Rationale!

I was recruited to Rationale mid-way through a gap year of rock climbing, mountaineering and mis-adventures around New Zealand. With the offer of engaging work and flexi-time, I jumped at the chance to join the team.

My first year at Rationale has been great. I have worked on a $400,000,000 financial model, learnt the ins and outs of consulting and climbed Aoraki. What more could you ask for?
